HP Omen Complete Review – All You Need To Know

Is HP Omen the best Gaming Laptop Under 2000? HP has given the street design of omen last year with a sleek, modern look. It is all about angled air vents and carbon finished texture. The new design provides better cooling and increases the maximum possible air flow of about 20 percent, but it is not free of charge. Compared to other 17-inch gaming laptops, HP Omen is much thinner at 33 mm, but it is heavier than last year’s model, with the base weight without power supply, to 8 pounds, 3 ounces.

The new Omen 17 is equipped with connections, most of them on the left-hand side. You will receive a Mini Display Port, HDMI, Ethernet, USB 3.1 (Gen 1) Type A, USB 3.1 (Gen 1) Type C, Headset, microphone and an SD card reader. Good news! That Type-C connector also supports Thunderbolt 3, a feature sorely missing in the 2016 model. Not enough USB for you? The right-hand side of the vehicle has another pair of the type-A connector, supports USB 3.1 (Gen 1), together with the power plug.

We have a special note of the 2016 maintainability of the omen in comparison to other major gaming laptops. There was only one small door, giving you access to the RAM, and all other upgrades (such as a new hard disk) would require a more intensive demo days. HP has moved backward in the 2017 Design. You may not ever get inside, without at least 10 screws on the entire underside.

The full-size keyboard is the same as last year, complete with red LED backlighting, a full 10-key keyboard and a number of macro keys on the left side. The touchpad has not changed, either: it works well but by far not the best Windows Touchpads such as those on the surface or surface laptop.

The Best Gaming Laptop Under 2000

The 17-inch omen we did last year was remarkable, for the high-end hardware at a very reasonable price. That still applies, and it is still the biggest strength of HP gaming notebook. Our system of the review came with an Intel processor packaged, a GeForce 1070, I7-7700 HQ-graphics card, 32 GB DDR4 RAM, two 256GB M. 2 NVMe drives and a 1TB SATA 7200 RPM hard drive.

Options Available

i7-6700HQ / GTX1070 / 16GB / 256NVMe+1TB

i7-7700HQ / GTX1070 / 16GB / 128SATA+1TB

i7-7700HQ / GTX1070 / 16GB / 256NVMe+1TB

i7-7700HQ / GTX1070 / 16GB / 512NVME+1TB

i7-7700HQ / GTX1070 / 32GB / 1TBNVME+2TB

i7-7700HQ / GTX1070 / 32GB / 256NVMe+1TB

Our review unit has the 60Hz 4K-IPS panel, but a 120 Hz 1080p panel is also available (and in view of the 17.3 inch, it might be a better choice for serious gamers). Both are G-Sync compatible. The review unit also comes with a wide-angle 1080p webcam with a microphone. Performance is only so-so, but it has an IR sensor so Windows supports hello.

All this is by a 86 watt-hour battery, which lasted about 3 hours, 41 minutes in our battery rundown test (in which we calibrate to a 4K video file playing in the TV and Movies app on repeat). The battery life is pretty decent for a 17-inch gaming laptop, but of course, you can do it faster, if you play any of the games. Most of the gaming laptops are better described as “easily portable all-in-one computers” rather than something really meant, on which they are used, and this is no exception.

3DMark Fire Strike Extreme Performance

This is exactly what we expect from a Gtx1070 in a gaming notebook. It is noticeably behind the GTX 1080, but significantly ahead of the GTX 1060. Note that the GTX 1070 – HP omen from last year is just a little bit faster, about 3 percent, the error rate is right. This gap closes if we take a look at the total fire strike score, which is in line with the right slightly more than one percent difference.

Rise of the “Tomb Raider”- Performance

At a resolution of 1080p, this thing cranks from over 100 frames per second in the rise of the Tomb Raider. In contrast to synthetic 3DMark test, the real game test did not produce the expected slight improvement in the performance of the oh-so-slightly faster CPU and RAM. This does tell you quite a bit about why the 120Hz, 1080p display choice may be the better option after all. With G-Sync, you will receive all benefit from running at these high frame rates. When you run the game at 3840 x 2160, the performance is at 37 fps. High image frequency is more for you to get, than the additional pixels.

Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor – Performance

If we have the beautiful shadow of Mordor crank up to its maximum settings and running in 1080p, we are able to average frame rates of over 120 fps. Once again, it’s just a little bit faster than model last year, but not so you would notice. At 4K, we are back below 60 fps. In particular, the average frame rate of 47 fps. This is not bad at all. In fact, it is pretty impressive for a notebook. But that is not the average

Handbrake Video Encoding Performance

What about non-gaming? A quick glance at Handbrake Video Encoding shows us, what do we expect from a Core I 7-7700 HQ and 32 GB DDR RAM 4-2400.

The HP system and other 7700 HQ-based laptops, and only a little bit faster than the core I 7-6700 HQ in model found last year. If you really need to edit some video, this quad-core notebook can certainly get the job done.

If you work in an office and want to surf the internet, well, this is too much of a good thing.

If we look at the big picture, we see a laptop with the same competitive qualities as a model from last year, in spite of the new design. It is good enough, feature-rich enough and fast enough to make you think twice about hundreds more for one of your competitors. HP offers a fantastic value here if you’re serious about “Value” in a high-end gaming laptop.
